Dina says, "These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The '...happily ever after' is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.

The project was inspired by my observation of three-year-old girls, who were developing an interest in Disney's Fairy tales. As a new mother I have been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girls fascinated with Princesses and their desire to dress up like them. The Disney versions almost always have sad beginning, with an overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess.

As a young girl, growing up abroad, I was not exposed to Fairy tales. These new discoveries lead to my fascination with the origins of Fairy tales. I explored the original brothers Grimm's stories and found that they have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney. I began to imagine Disney's perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues."

It is a magazine dedicated to all the stuff I love (music, art, fashion, culture, style) and it is based in the part of the world where I live. For the moment, the magazine is not yet available in Slovenia, but I am harassing them to get them into this market.

I still haven't seen it (and I'm sure it's gonna be a long time before it makes it my way), but independent cinema about two black indie rock hipsters, having a one night stand, having serious discussions, and riding bikes? My family is from Ghana so I am a little bit biased towards cool stuff that comes from there. I just found about this fun new Ghanaian company and couldn't wait to tell you about them!

Trashy Bags is a cool and environmentally-minded project: old plastic bags which normally pollute the streets (in which things like single serving water and ice cream are sold, see here) are collected and turned into fresh new reusable totes, backpacks, duffle bags, and even briefcases! The people who collect them from the street get paid for bringing them in, the people that assemble them get paid by the company, the company makes money from the sales of the bags, and Ghana has cleaner streets. Everybody wins!

I'm gonna try and order some right away!

Zulema Griffin

Zulema Griffin is a beautiful and talented black designer who was featured on the reality show Project Runway. In true PR style she has broken away from the fashion pack and is doing things her own way by shunning the Bryant Park tents and putting her fashion on Youtube for the masses.

The collection are a bit stark but beautiful, Griffin says the designs were inspired by the classic black church fashion shows, and the big hats make that pretty clear. I must say that the models in full body black catsuits remind me a lit of Leigh Bowery, but that's not a bad thing, as a matter of fact I think that so far it's the wittiest response to the dearth of black models that I've seen.

I recently decided to jump into Etsy. I don't think it is as user friendly or smart as it should be, and so like a fool I stayed away too long, waiting for the day that they would update the interface. That day hasn't come, but I came over to the site anyhow and have been busily trolling through and tagging my favorites and planning future purchases. One seller who is on almsot everyone's fave list is the fabulous Junk Prints.

Junk Prints' Brooklyn-based designer, Chanel Kennebrew, makes awesomely witty shirts, jackets, dresses, and bags in bright bold colors and I want almost everything that she's selling. I want it all now, but unfortunately my pocketbook disagrees with me, so until we can work something out, I'll just be here drooling over (and highlighting as favorites) all the fantastic Junk Prints.

Mexico-based Milka Manifesto creates neck-centered works of art. To call them necklaces would be a disservice. they start at the neck, but they are more like art pieces mounted in that location. They dont dangle and lay in the way chains do, so i refuse to conflate the two. Until someone comes up with a better word, i'll just be calling them by their extended name: beautiful Milka Manifesto creations.

Doshi Levien design house in London created a beautiful range of cooking implements for Tefal a few years back. The pots, produced under the name Mosaic, are used to prepare various special cuisines from around the world. They're a bit tough to find now but look to be well worth the search.

Pecha Kucha (pronounced peh-chak-cha) was started in Tokyo, Japan in February 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham as a designers' show and tell event to attract more people to SuperDeluxe, their multi-media experimental event space they had set up in Roppongi.

The idea behind Pecha Kucha is to keep presentations concise, the interest level up and to have many presenters sharing their ideas within the course of one night. Therefore the 20x20 Pecha Kucha format was created: each presenter is allowed a slideshow of 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each. This results in a total presentation time of 6 minutes 40 seconds on a stage before the next presenter is up. Each event usually has 14 presenters. Presenters (and much of the audience) are usually from the design, architecture, photography, art and creative fields, but recently it has also streched over to the business world.

Kaikai Kiki Co was founded by Takashi Murakami in 2001, and evolved from its predecessor, the Hiropon Factory, which was founded in 1996.
